Make the task clear and keep the challenge appropriate
In a word problem, a tutor could clarify what is happening before asking your child to choose a calculation. For example, a simple drawing of equal groups can make the relationship visible without giving away the answer. The tutor can then check whether your child understands the maths separately from any confusing wording. Support should leave room for extension when the idea is secure.
Interests are an invitation, not an assumption
If your child enjoys a particular topic, ask whether they would like it used in examples. A favourite interest can be helpful, but it should not be imposed on every task.
Frequently asked questions
Are the lessons the same for every autistic child?
No. Discuss communication preferences, the learning environment and what your child wants from the lesson. Agree an approach and review it together rather than relying on a standard autism lesson format.
Can a tutor work on reasoning as well as arithmetic?
Yes. Ask how they would support explaining a choice, comparing methods or checking whether an answer is sensible. A child who is confident with calculation may still want help with unfamiliar wording.
What does the experience label mean?
