Small tasks with a clear purpose
Make the first step visible
Choose one example and agree what to do first. Keep the instruction available so your child can return to it without remembering a long explanation.
Build in participation
Use counters, a drawing or the shared whiteboard to explore a number idea. Ask your child to explain or show a choice.
Agree useful pauses
Discuss whether short pauses or a change of activity would help. The plan should respond to your child rather than follow a rigid timer.
Keep the maths goal in view
For a fractions lesson, the aim might be to show why two fractions are equivalent using equal-sized shapes. Your child can compare diagrams, explain a choice and then try a numerical example. A tutor can adjust how much is on screen while keeping the mathematical idea suitably challenging. One clear success gives you something specific to recognise afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Does my child have to sit completely still?
Discuss what helps them participate with the tutor. A comfortable setup and agreed ways of taking a pause can be part of the lesson. Concentration should not be judged only by stillness.
Can lessons support school maths and SATs preparation?
Tell the tutor the year group and school priorities. Lessons can focus on understanding number, calculation or reasoning before building towards relevant assessment practice. Avoid making every activity a timed test.
How do we choose a tutor with the right experience?
