Supporting dyslexia in KS2 Maths

Ways a maths task could be presented

TaskAn approach to discuss
A word problemRead it together, identify the important information and draw the situation.
A new methodKeep a worked example visible and explain one step at a time.
Showing understandingLet your child demonstrate with objects or a drawing before writing the calculation.

Check understanding before adding speed

For a problem about sharing, a tutor might use counters to show equal groups, ask your child to explain the arrangement and then connect it to division notation. This helps identify whether the difficulty lies in the concept, the reading or remembering the sequence of steps. The next task can target that difficulty rather than repeat a whole worksheet.

Keep the distinction clear

Dyslexia and dyscalculia are different. Do not assume that a dyslexic child has difficulty understanding number. Describe the actual task your child finds challenging and ask the tutor how they would investigate it.

Frequently asked questions

Can lessons help with mathematical vocabulary?

Yes. Ask about explaining words such as difference, product or equivalent through examples, diagrams and use in questions. Check understanding in context rather than relying on a definition alone.

Does my child need specialist dyslexia tuition?

That depends on the support you are seeking. These are subject tutor listings with self-reported dyslexia experience. If you need a particular specialist qualification, check it directly in the profile and with the tutor.

What should we bring to the introduction?

A school question your child found difficult and an example they enjoyed can be useful. The free 15-minute introduction lets you discuss how the tutor would make maths accessible while keeping it appropriately challenging.

The lesson ideas above are examples to discuss with your tutor, not a fixed programme for every learner. For wider educational information, see British Dyslexia Association teaching guidance.
