Each paper contributes one third of the qualification. The non-calculator paper is the middle paper in each tier. A useful starting point is to bring a marked question and explain where the working became uncertain. Your tutor can distinguish a gap in understanding from a slip with signs, fractions or units, then set a closely related question to check the next step.
Methods that hold together
Connect fractions, percentages and ratio instead of learning each procedure in isolation. Explain why a step works before moving on.
Showing mathematical reasoning
Practise writing enough working to make an argument clear. Compare two possible approaches and decide which is more efficient.
Approaching unfamiliar problems
Identify the information given, sketch a diagram where useful and try a manageable first step before judging the whole question.
Ask the tutor about your child’s current tier and target. OCR Foundation covers grades 1 to 5, while Higher targets grades 4 to 9. Tier entry is a school decision, so discuss any proposed change with the teacher.
You can start with the topic causing difficulty now. A recent exercise book or assessment is useful for planning lessons, even when there is no mock result yet.
Read the tutor’s teaching approach and qualifications, then arrange a free 15-minute introduction. Ask how they would explain one topic your child finds difficult and how you would review progress together.
