Make each skill support the others

Each component contributes 25%. Speaking includes 15 minutes of preparation in addition to the assessment time. The current course, first assessed in 2026, includes a read-aloud task and listening dictation. A tutor can connect pronunciation to spelling, then use the same vocabulary in conversation and a short written task. This gives new words more than one context.

Practice with a clear purpose

A short conversation

Rehearse a response, ask a follow-up question and change the time frame. Keep the exchange flexible rather than learning one fixed answer.

Listening for meaning

Listen for a particular detail, then discuss which words signalled it. Build up to longer passages as confidence develops.

More accurate writing

Plan a few connected ideas and check the verbs carefully. Improve a small number of recurring errors rather than correcting everything at once.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the International GCSE?

No. This page covers the UK Edexcel GCSE French course. International GCSE is a different qualification, so share the exact title or code with the tutor.

Can my child practise without feeling put on the spot?

Ask how the tutor introduces speaking tasks. Planning time, a model answer and agreed prompts can make a useful starting point, depending on your child’s preferences.

How do we get started?

Arrange a free 15-minute introduction and explain which skill feels most difficult. A recent class task helps the tutor suggest a relevant first lesson.
