Use materials for the current specification
Each skill contributes 25%. Speaking has an additional 15 minutes of supervised preparation. The 8652 specification includes reading aloud and dictation, so practice should reflect the current tasks rather than only the previous course.
Build confidence through small, connected tasks
Hear and say it
Practise a short sound pattern, listen for it in a word and then use that word in a sentence.
Extend an answer
Start with a clear response, add a reason and change a detail. This develops flexibility beyond one memorised script.
Check a translation
Identify the time frame and subject, then check verb forms and agreements. Discuss why a tempting word-for-word version does not work.
Frequently asked questions
Can lessons concentrate on speaking?
Yes, but ask how the tutor links speaking with listening and vocabulary. A short regular speaking task can sit alongside the reading and writing your child is doing at school.
Do we need Foundation or Higher support?
Tell the tutor the school’s current entry plan. If it is undecided, discuss present strengths and difficulties with the teacher rather than selecting a tier solely from a target grade.
What should we bring to the introduction?
A vocabulary list, recent writing or teacher feedback gives a useful starting point. The free 15-minute introduction lets your child meet the tutor and discuss what would make practice feel more comfortable.
