Read for a change
Notice where a writer shifts attention, pace or tone. Explain the effect using a detail from the extract rather than a rehearsed sentence.
Compare a viewpoint
Find a meaningful similarity or difference between two texts. Support it from both, then explain how the writers create it.
Write for a reader
For a non-fiction task, decide who you are addressing and why. Let that choice shape the opening, examples and level of formality.
A page covered in corrections can be hard to act on. Ask the tutor to identify one or two priorities and give your child another opportunity to apply them. Improving sentence control or developing an explanation is easier to see when the next task has a specific purpose.
English Language uses unseen reading material. English Literature is a different GCSE with set texts. Bring the correct paper or course code so the tutor targets the right skills.
Discuss what makes writing difficult. A tutor might begin with spoken planning and a short paragraph before gradually increasing independence and length.
Yes. A free 15-minute introduction lets your child meet the tutor and gives you a chance to discuss recent feedback, confidence and goals.
