The reading extracts are unseen. A useful lesson might take one short passage and explore how a particular word changes its mood, then develop that observation into a paragraph. AQA has updated question wording and some task formats from 2026, so the tutor should use current guidance rather than relying entirely on older paper routines.
Read closely
Select a short, relevant quotation and explain its effect in the passage. Avoid collecting techniques without explaining why they matter.
Shape a viewpoint
Decide what a reader should think or feel. Organise examples and paragraph order around that purpose.
Edit deliberately
Check whether sentences are clear and varied. Improve one aspect of a draft at a time instead of rewriting everything without a focus.
English Language assesses unseen reading and writing rather than a set Literature text list. Regular reading and focused practice are more relevant than memorising a fixed essay.
Ask how the tutor moves from discussion to planning and then writing. Starting with a short response can help reveal what is getting in the way without making the task feel overwhelming.
Use the free 15-minute introduction to explain your child’s goals, teacher feedback and confidence with each paper. Ask the tutor how they would make progress visible.
