A useful tuition task is to rebuild a method from its purpose. Identify the question, what changes, what is measured and what must remain consistent. Then consider what the results can reasonably show. Now ask what happens if the same cell is shown at twice the magnification. Its actual size remains 50 µm, while the image becomes twice as long. This follow-up tests the meaning of magnification as well as the calculation.
A tutor can then reverse the task: if a 50 µm cell is shown at ×400, how long is the image? Converting 50 µm to 0.05 mm gives an image length of 20 mm. Explaining why the units need to match is a useful habit that transfers to other science calculations.
A longer response is easier to organise when the learner first identifies its purpose. Are they explaining a process, comparing outcomes or evaluating a conclusion? A short plan can prevent a detailed paragraph from answering a different question.
For a comparison, pair the relevant features rather than writing two unrelated descriptions. For an evaluation, weigh the evidence and its limitations before reaching a conclusion. Ask the tutor to review a real example of your child’s writing and show how to make its reasoning clearer. There is no single sentence template that fits every task.
