About OCR GCSE Biology
Which OCR Biology course?

Start with the process behind the answer
Both courses have 90 marks per paper, with each paper worth 50%. Their organisation differs, so use the correct course materials. In a lesson on movement across membranes, for example, a tutor might ask your child to draw particles, describe what changes and explain why. Only then would they turn that understanding into a concise written answer.
Useful biology lesson activities
Explain a diagram
Label a structure and connect each part to its function. Practise describing what the diagram shows without relying on its labels alone.
Read the evidence
Choose figures from a graph to support a comparison. Notice whether the question asks for a description or an explanation.
Think through an investigation
Identify what changes, what is measured and what needs controlling. Explain how a proposed improvement would help.
Frequently asked questions
Will every tutor teach both OCR courses?
Do not assume so. The listings identify OCR experience, but you should confirm J247 or J257 and your child’s tier with the individual tutor before arranging lessons.
Is this the same as Combined Science?
No. These are separate GCSE Biology qualifications. If your child studies Combined Science, give the tutor that course title and code so the content and paper practice match.
