| Focus | A manageable starting point |
|---|---|
| A character | Choose two moments and explain what they reveal. |
| A quotation | Link a short piece of evidence to one argument. |
| A poem | Explore one change in tone or one important image. |
| An essay | Plan the purpose of each paragraph before drafting. |
Instead of revising every quotation in a chapter, a tutor might explore a single character’s decision and ask how it affects what follows. Your child can then choose evidence and explain the connection. A visible plan can hold the structure while they work on the wording. The amount of prompting should be reviewed so the response increasingly becomes their own.
Keep the text list accurate
English Literature specifications offer choices. A board name alone does not establish that a tutor teaches your child’s novel, play or poetry collection. Confirm the titles before booking.
Discuss selecting a manageable set of short quotations and connecting each to an idea in the text. Retrieval practice can then have a clear purpose rather than becoming a long list to memorise.
Ask how the tutor turns a spoken interpretation into a plan, then a paragraph. Starting with one useful point may reveal what makes the writing stage difficult.
The ADHD experience is self-reported. In a free 15-minute introduction, ask about relevant teaching examples, your child’s texts and how the tutor would adapt the amount and presentation of work.
The lesson ideas above are examples to discuss with your tutor, not a fixed programme for every learner. For wider educational information, see ADHD Foundation resources.
