About OCR GCSE Chemistry

Your OCR Chemistry route

QualificationCodePaper structure
Gateway Chemistry AJ248Two papers at the selected tier.
Twenty First Century Chemistry BJ258Breadth and Depth papers at the selected tier.

Understand what the symbols describe

Both routes have two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes, with 90 marks and a 50% contribution per paper. In tuition, a reaction can be approached in three ways: describe the observation, draw a particle model and write the equation. Moving between those representations helps reveal which part your child understands and where another explanation is needed.

Turn revision into useful practice

Equations

Check the formulae first, then balance the equation. Discuss why changing a coefficient is different from changing a formula.

Calculations

Identify the quantity required and record units at each stage. Try a second example with different values to check independence.

Practical reasoning

Explain why a test or separation method is appropriate, then connect the expected observation to the conclusion.

Frequently asked questions

What information should we give the tutor?

Send the course code, tier and a recent piece of work. Ask whether the tutor has taught that particular OCR route rather than assuming that all OCR materials are interchangeable.

Can a lesson focus on calculations?

Yes. A tutor can work through the mathematical skills needed for your child’s current chemistry topics, including ratios, units and substitutions, then apply them to relevant questions.

Is tuition suitable before Year 11?

It can support understanding as the course develops. A free 15-minute introduction is a chance to discuss current topics and decide whether regular lessons or a focused sequence would be useful.
