Supporting adhd in GCSE Biology

Different ways into a biology topic

A process in stages

Build a short sequence on the whiteboard and explain what happens at each stage. Return to the whole process once the parts are clear.

Vocabulary in context

Use a small number of terms in an actual explanation. Check that your child can distinguish similar words rather than only recognise them.

One exam skill

Choose a graph, calculation or short explanation and practise that skill with feedback before combining tasks.

Choose revision that requires a response

Reading notes can feel familiar without showing what is understood. A tutor might ask your child to label a diagram from memory, explain one missing link or compare two answers. These are possible starting points, not a fixed programme. Agree which tasks feel useful, how much is on screen and when a pause or change would help.

Information that helps the tutor plan

BringWhy it helps
Exam board and course codeIt distinguishes separate Biology from Combined Science.
A marked questionIt shows the specific skill or concept to explore.
Your child’s feedbackIt helps the tutor adapt pace, instructions and practice.

Frequently asked questions

Will the tutor know our exam board?

Check it directly. This listing matches Biology and ADHD experience, but your child’s specific board and qualification still need confirming with the tutor.

Can support include exam technique?

Yes. Discuss reading the command word, choosing relevant information and checking an answer. Practice should be matched to the course and adjusted to your child’s needs.

Does ADHD experience mean specialist accreditation?

No. It is self-reported experience. Ask about qualifications and examples of support during the free 15-minute introduction, then decide whether the tutor fits your child’s needs.

The lesson ideas above are examples to discuss with your tutor, not a fixed programme for every learner. For wider educational information, see ADHD Foundation resources.
