About OCR A-Level Physics

Two OCR routes, different papers

CourseCodeWritten papers
Physics AH556Modelling: 2h 15m; Exploring: 2h 15m; Unified: 1h 30m
Physics B, Advancing PhysicsH557Fundamentals: 2h 15m; Scientific literacy: 2h 15m; Practical skills: 1h 30m

A reliable starting process

Represent

Sketch the situation

Show the important forces, circuit elements or wave features. Identify the quantities you know and the one you need.

Reason

Choose a relationship

Explain why a principle applies. Keep units visible and state assumptions such as negligible resistance where appropriate.

Review

Check the result

Consider its size, sign and units. Ask whether the answer fits the physical situation.

Practical understanding belongs throughout the course

Both routes include written practical questions and a separately reported practical endorsement. Tuition can develop interpretation of graphs, uncertainty and experimental methods. Your school or centre organises the practical endorsement.

Frequently asked questions

Can a tutor teach both OCR routes?

Some may, but check. The same exam durations do not mean the same papers or teaching approach. Share H556 or H557 and your current topics.

Can we focus on scientific explanations?

Yes. Practise linking a cause to its effect using the relevant physics. Compare a vague statement with an explanation that identifies the mechanism.
