Follow the data
Trace what happens to an instruction or piece of data through a system. Explain the role of each component in the process.
Choose the algorithm
Compare possible approaches to a problem. Use a small example to show how the chosen method behaves.
Answer the command word
Distinguish describing a process from explaining its purpose or evaluating a choice. Use evidence that addresses the task.
A short exercise can reveal whether the difficulty lies in decomposition, a data structure or the programming syntax. Your tutor can help you practise that skill separately, then apply it to a new problem. This makes progress easier to recognise than repeatedly attempting a whole paper without targeted feedback.
General skills can be developed within your centre’s rules. The assessed analysis, code, testing and evaluation must remain your own. A tutor should not write or rewrite your submission.
Discuss the language and environment your school uses before booking. Check that the tutor can support the relevant concepts and conventions.
Use a free 15-minute introduction to share one difficult question and discuss how the tutor would approach it with you.
