About OCR GCSE Physics

OCR separate Physics routes

CourseCodeAssessment at each tier
Gateway Physics AJ249Two 90-mark papers, 1 hour 45 minutes each.
Twenty First Century Physics BJ259Breadth and Depth papers, 90 marks and 1 hour 45 minutes each.

Keep the reasoning visible

Each paper is worth half the qualification. For calculation practice, ask your child to say what they are finding before choosing an equation. A tutor might compare two circuit diagrams or sketch a motion graph before adding numbers. This makes it easier to see whether a difficulty concerns the physics, the mathematical steps or the language of the question.

Useful areas for targeted support

Quantities and units

Convert values before calculating and label the result. Explain what a larger or smaller answer would mean in context.

Graphs and relationships

Describe the relationship, interpret a gradient where appropriate and distinguish the shape of the graph from the physical motion.

Practical explanations

Connect a measurement to the equipment used. Explain the purpose of repeats and identify a specific source of uncertainty.

Frequently asked questions

Is this for separate Physics or Combined Science?

This page discusses separate Physics. Combined Science has its own specification and assessment. Share the course code rather than relying on the word Physics alone.

What if my child struggles with the maths?

A tutor can work on rearranging equations, standard form and units alongside the physics topic that needs them. Ask for practice at your child’s current level.

How do we check the fit?

Book a free 15-minute introduction and ask about J249 or J259, the tier and the topics causing difficulty. OCR experience does not automatically mean experience of both specifications.

Further reading: OCR Physics A J249; OCR Physics B J259. Course information checked in September 2026. Confirm your specification and entry details with your school or college.
