Can we work on translation in both directions?

Yes. Discuss meaning, register and sentence structure before checking individual word choices. A useful exercise is to explain why a literal translation sounds wrong.

Can lessons help with essay analysis?

You can practise making a focused claim and supporting it with precise moments from the work. Retelling the plot should not replace an argument.
