Is Higher Biology the same as A Level Biology?
No. Higher Biology is a Scottish National Course at SCQF level 6, awarded by Qualifications Scotland. There is some topic overlap, but the two qualifications are not equivalent and a tutor who knows only A Level Biology may not be familiar with the specific requirements of the Scottish Higher course.
Why do some documents still say SQA rather than Qualifications Scotland?
Qualifications Scotland replaced the Scottish Qualifications Authority as Scotland's national awarding body on 1 February 2026. However, a large number of existing Higher Biology documents, past papers, marking instructions and school resources were produced under the SQA name and remain in use. Qualifications Scotland has confirmed that these documents remain valid until they are updated, so seeing SQA branding does not mean a resource is out of date.
Has the Higher Biology exam structure changed recently?
Yes. From session 2026 to 2027 onwards, Higher Biology moved from two separate question papers to one combined question paper worth 100 marks and lasting 2 hours 30 minutes. Section 1 contains 20 marks of multiple-choice questions and Section 2 contains 80 marks of restricted-response and extended-response questions. The assignment is now scaled to 25 marks rather than 30, and it contributes 20 per cent of the overall course assessment. The course content itself has not changed.
