I've seen a Direct Debit set up by Stripe - is Klasu charging me?
Seen a "Direct Debit: Stripe" on your bank after setting up payouts? Klasu never charges tutors. Here's what that mandate is and actually when its used.
Short answer: no - Klasu never charges you. You only ever get paid.
When you set up payments as a tutor, we create a Stripe Express account so your earnings can be paid into your bank. As part of this, Stripe automatically sets up a standard Direct Debit mandate on your account - your bank may send you a notice like "New Direct Debit: Stripe Payments UK Ltd." This is completely normal and the mandate usually sits unused.
When would Stripe ever use it? Only to recover a negative balance on your Stripe account - for example if a lesson is refunded to a student, or a payment is disputed/charged back, and your Stripe balance doesn't cover it. Stripe then collects the shortfall from your bank. This isn't a Klasu fee or subscription - our commission is always taken from the student's payment, never from you.
What should I do?
- If it's just a mandate set up notification → nothing has been taken; you can ignore it.
- If an actual payment left your account → check your Stripe dashboard for a recent refund, dispute, or chargeback (the statement payee will show as Stripe). Still unsure? Contact us with the date and amount and we'll look into it with you.
